Don’t you hate it when you’ve had a long day and come home to your mascara running down your face, your foundation smudged and your lipstick melted? Yeah, me too. In fact, it’s taken beauty experts a few years to develop a makeup routine that really beats the humidity as spring rolls around.
Before the Foundation Hits
It is super important for you to get products that will withstand both the moisture in the air and the sweat you’ll generate. So it’s equally essential for you to get products that will upgrade your makeup collection. Here’s your shopping list:
- Waterproof Mascara
- Bold Liquid Lipstick
- Setting Spray (travel size and full size)
- Face Primer and Eyeshadow Primer
- Translucent Powder
- Pressed Powder
- Blotting Paper
- Makeup Remover Pads
Before the Brush Hits
Before you sit at your vanity, there are two simple rules to live by during Spring: 1) Less is more; and 2) Start Clean.
During the season, most people prefer more minimalistic looks. At first glance, it may be because it’s “just another trend.” However, wearing less product (especially around your eyes) means that there is less product to melt off your face during the day. By skipping some steps, you are actually allowing your skin to breathe a little better, thus keeping oil under better control.
To make sure those pores aren’t clogged when you put on makeup, make sure your skin is cleaned and hydrated. This will keep pores from getting clogged with excess dirt and oil before makeup gets put on so your face won’t be too oily afterward.
Before You Leave
As you sit by your vanity with your cleaned and moisturized face, it might be a little confusing which steps to start with first. Here’s a basic guide to help you out:
1) Primer and Eyeshadow Primer
Primers are used for two main purposes: evening your skin layers and ensuring your makeup will stay on your face for as long as possible. Most of our skin is a little uneven due to factors such as acne scars, pores and more. Primer basically fills the “pits” of our skin to ensure that your foundation doesn’t sink in and highlight the fact that we have bumpier skin. Plus, it helps the loose powder adhere to our skin better.
Though not needed, eyeshadow primer is recommended. Since the skin around our eyes tends to be more sensitive, we need a gentler formula that helps smooth out our skin while keeping eyeshadow and eyeliner on.
It’s also important to know your skin type. If you tend to have drier skin, using an oil-based primer helps hydrate your skin and decrease the amount of dry skin you may have. If you tend to have oilier skin, using a water-based primer helps gently hydrate your skin without adding extra oil to your face.
2) Foundation and Concealer
Your regular foundation and concealer routine will do!
3) Translucent Powder
Translucent powder mattifies your skin while setting your concealer in place. Though they often look white in the packaging, they often won’t look that way on your skin.
Once again, it’s important to know your skin type:
If you have dry skin, simply use a beauty sponge or a fluffy powder brush to dust the translucent powder all over your skin. Some beauty gurus with dryer skin report that this method will mattify your skin without making it look too patchy during the day.
If you have oilier skin, then you would want to use the baking technique. Essentially, use a dense makeup brush and pack the translucent powder onto the areas of your skin where you had put your concealer on. Leave the powder on for 5-10 minutes (while working on other areas of your skin), and use a fluffy brush to dust the powder off your face.
4) Brows and Eyeshadow
As mentioned before, go for a minimalistic look if you know you’ll be out all day in the humid weather. However, your go-to eye makeup routine will work.
If you are an eyeliner gal, try to switch to a waterproof liquid formula. The color is more intense. Don’t be scared off thinking liquid eyeliners are more terrifying to use. A liquid eyeliner won’t smudge nearly as much throughout the day, saving you from raccoon eyes.
When using mascara, definitely use a waterproof formula as well. Whenever you blink, your mascara comes into slight contact with your skin, creating raccoon eyes if your mascara starts to melt off your face. Therefore, using waterproof is better at preventing this effect.
5) Contour, Blush, Highlight
Don’t feel too pressured to contour, blush, or highlight, as spa skin is in trend right now., However, if you do have a routine, definitely do it now!
6) Bold Lip
Unlike wax-based lipstick, bold liquid lipstick has less chance of melting off your face during the day. In fact, liquid lipstick is designed to stay on your skin for longer periods of time. Plus, if you are rocking the minimalistic eye makeup look, then a bold lip makeup is a great way to amp up your look without it looking too intense.
7) Setting Spray
Think of the setting spray as the hairspray for your makeup – it locks everything in place. It gives you that dewy finish that is popular in makeup. Once the setting spray dries, it ensures that your makeup won’t shift too much.
Before Your Makeup Melts
During the day, you are probably on-the-go. This leaves your makeup time to melt off your face as humidity’s side effects begin to hit. Lucky for you, there are a few tips and tricks that our beauty experts have mastered that keeps their makeup fresh during the day.
Makeup Removal Pads
Let’s face it – there are times where your prep work starts to fade during the day. Keeping some makeup removal pads can quickly erase any makeup faults that might happen during the day. This acts as your emergency band-aid during the day.
Setting Spray
Setting spray is also meant to keep your makeup looking fresh throughout the day. A little spritz of setting spray here or there makes sure that everything is in place and remains perfect until you get home.
Pressed Powder
When oil starts to seep through the makeup, it leaves an extremely shiny film with hints of your foundation. This is the first sign of your makeup beginning to melt off your face. Rest assured, adding some pressed powder will immediately mattify the face while locking the foundation once again. This leaves you with a very matte finish.
Before You Sleep
It’s super important for you to get all that makeup off. During the day, your foundation and primer are still clogging your pores, so leaving that behind would lead to the development of acne and other blemishes. So, making sure you are makeup free before you hit the sack is perhaps the most important makeup step of all.
