Diaper Need Affects Thousands of Texans

One in three American families experiences diaper need, which is a lack of sufficient supply of diapers to keep an infant clean, dry, and healthy. Currently, no state or federal child safety-net program allocates money specifically for purchasing diapers. Diaper banks across the country help families access clean diapers for their babies. The Austin Diaper Bank works with 30 agencies to serve over 10,000 Central Texas families each year.

At Shop LC, our purpose is Delivering Joy. It’s essential to our team that we give back to the communities in which we operate. To promote the spirit of philanthropy, Shop LC makes paid time off available for employees to do volunteer work and give back to our community. One of those opportunities was volunteering at the Austin Diaper Bank.

Volunteering at Austin Diaper Bank

It was my first time at the Diaper Bank, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. When our group of volunteers first arrived, we learned what the Austin Diaper Bank does and why the need for diapers for low-income families is so dire. I was shocked to learn that no government assistance goes directly towards diapers. I also learned that the Austin Diaper Bank goes beyond baby diapers and accepts donations of baby formula, adult diapers, bed pads, and menstrual supplies as well.

Storing diapers for distribution.

After introductions, we split into groups to start working. One team was taking inventory of the week’s donations and making sure they were ready to be placed into storage. The other group was responsible for organizing the donations and breaking down large packs of diapers into bundles of 25 for easy distribution to families. Plus, it was incredible to see how many supplies arrived just that week! Though they operate out of a small facility, it’s clear that the Austin Diaper Bank is taking on a huge task.

Sorting and wrapping diapers.

After a few hours of work, we processed many diapers for pickup by the Diaper Bank’s affiliates. Also, it was very fulfilling to know that our efforts will help families in need. It truly felt like we made a difference locally.

Delivering Joy means many things at Shop LC, one of the most critical being giving back to our community. For instance, the Austin Diaper Bank fills a significant void that still lacks awareness. Bringing our forces together resulted in being able to make a direct impact in our community.
