Today the world celebrates International Women’s Day. And Yes, one could say… ‘look at the progress women have made.’ On the other hand, we still have a long way to go. As you read this blog, take some time today to reflect on how far you have come and what your journey might look like in 2023 embracing equity.

A DAY DEDICATED TO YOU

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually, each March 8, to celebrate women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements and raise awareness about the ongoing fight for gender equality. Today is the day to recognize our contributions to society and advocate for all women’s rights and empowerment.

Multiple milestones are marking the first International Women’s Day. According to the US Census Bureau, in 1908, women working in the needle trade industry took to the streets of New York City’s Lower East Side to protest child labor, harsh working conditions, and to demand the right to vote. This March served as a catalyst for the annual observance of International Women’s Day, which was first celebrated on March 8, 1910. Just imagine what this must have

been like.

Women’s History Week was established in 1978 to incorporate women’s history into educational curricula to acknowledge women’s contributions further. This effort led to the recognition of March as National Women’s History Month. It wasn’t until 1987, after the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress, that there was an official acknowledgment of women’s economic, political, and social achievements throughout history. International Women’s Day has grown into a global movement that brings together governments, organizations, and individuals to act to improve the lives of women and girls around the world.

International Women’s Day has a different theme each year, and events are organized worldwide to celebrate women’s achievements and call for gender equality. Some of the critical issues that are often highlighted on this day include women’s access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, as well as the need to end violence against women and girls. The 2023 theme is #EmbraceEquity.

WHAT DOES EMBRACING EQUITY EVEN MEAN?

Of course, we can translate the primary meaning, which is to actively support and promote fairness, justice, and impartiality towards all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, religion, or other personal characteristics that could otherwise result in discrimination or unequal treatment. But let’s dig a little deeper. To embrace equity is to acknowledge and work towards eliminating systemic biases, inequalities, and injustices that have historically disadvantaged certain groups. We need to not just strive towards a level playing field but create one where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. It involves recognizing and valuing diversity and promoting inclusive policies and practices that enable everyone to reach their full potential. It involves more than pretending to acknowledge it but to indeed do something about it by taking action.

How do you acknowledge equity or the lack of? For some things, it’s easy. Just look around. When you’re at a place of business, do the genders balance out, are a range of ages and skin tones represented? It is also the part you can’t always see; the pay, the perks, and the expectations on performance. Who is asked to plan the parties? Clean up the mess? Take notes? Are these duties shared? Are team members truly Embracing Equity?

HOW TO EMBRACE EQUITY

Embracing equity for women involves recognizing and addressing the systemic inequalities that have historically suppressed women in many areas of life. Here are some steps you can take to embrace equity for women:

  • Challenge gender stereotypes: Be aware of the gender stereotypes in society, and challenge them when you see them. Avoid perpetuating gender biases and work to create a more inclusive and diverse environment for women.
  • Support women’s leadership: Advocate for more women in leadership positions and support their efforts to advance their careers. Encourage and mentor women to pursue leadership roles in their careers.
  • Support women’s rights: Support organizations promoting women’s rights and equality. Donate money, volunteer, or participate in events that raise awareness and promote gender equity.
  • Speak out against harassment and discrimination: Speak up when you witness harassment or discrimination against women. Educate yourself and others about the impact of these behaviors and the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces for everyone.
  • Recognize and celebrate women’s achievements: Recognize and celebrate the achievements of women in your workplace, community, and beyond. Highlight their contributions and support their efforts to succeed and excel.

For women, advocating for themselves can be challenging, but it’s an essential skill for women to develop. Here are some ways women can support themselves:

  • Identify your goals: Set goals for yourself, both short-term and long-term, and plan for achieving them. This will help you stay focused and motivated.
  • Speak up: Be vocal about your needs, wants, and opinions. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want or to express your thoughts and ideas. Learn to communicate effectively and assertively. It’s OK to say no.
  • Build a support system: Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you, both personally and professionally. Seek mentors, colleagues, and friends who can provide guidance and advice.
  • Invest in your skills and education: Continuously improve your skills and knowledge through education, training, and development opportunities. This will help you stay competitive and advance in your career.
  • Take calculated risks: Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks, such as applying for a new job, asking for a promotion, or starting your own business. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities.
  • Negotiate: Learn how to negotiate effectively, whether negotiating for a higher salary, better benefits, or more flexible working arrangements. Practice negotiating with friends or colleagues to build your skills.
  • Be persistent: Persistence is key when advocating for yourself. Don’t give up if you encounter obstacles or setbacks. Keep pushing forward and stay committed to your goals.

Remember, it’s your day to stand tall and be proud of YOU! Know that there are people out there fighting for you!
