On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington State, and it was considered the largest known debris avalanche in recorded history. This famous volcanic eruption was a disaster, but from this great tragedy came a great beauty known as Helenite.
Named after its volcanic origins, Helenite is an exquisite and vibrant man-made gemstone crafted from volcanic ash. During the cleanup after the eruption, workers used acetylene torches to cut through the twisted metal debris. They noticed that the gray ash was melting and transforming into a vibrant deep green color, which was Helenite.
This volcanic jewel can be found in gorgeous shades of deep blue, burgundy and deep green (which is the most prized hue). It’s created by crushing volcanic ash and rock and fusing it at temperatures as high as 2,700 degrees.
According to gem lore, Helenite is said to bring one into harmony with the heart of Mother Earth, as it is derived from deep within the heart of the Earth. What’s not lore is how gorgeous Helenite jewelry is! Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Helenite Heart Pendant 2. Helenite Bracelet 3. Helenite Earrings
