Host with the Most: Dionne

How did your hosting career start?

I was in graduate school getting my masters in communications and approaching my final semester, when it crossed my mind that I really need to get a job. I had to figure out what I was going to do with my life. I read online about a national TV channel looking for hosts. I thought it was too good to be true. I thought it was a joke! I was able to get an interview, and they hired me on the spot. That was when the channel first started in 2007.

What is your typical workday like?

Ideally I get here two hours before I go on air. I come in like a hurricane, because I get straight out of bed. I need my time to get myself together, like hair and makeup. Then I get together with my crew, and we look at the merchandise that will be in the show. We determine if it will be enough products. Later, I call merchandising and have discussions about my talking points. We try to plan and iron out all of those kinks beforehand.

Do you buy any of the items you sell?

Last year I bought my first major tanzanite piece. It was an accomplishment type of thing. The fact that I could finally do it was satisfying. I’ve been selling it and watching everyone else get theirs, so it was a joy when I finally got mine. It’s a ring and I love it! The problem is that I buy it all! But it’s an investment, and while you’re here, you have to live it up!

What’s your favorite gemstone?

I’ve been in love with three. There’s kunzite; it’s just absolutely stunning and I love it. I know tanzanite is cliché and everyone loves it, but I really do love it. I always like the richer, deeper, more expensive ones that I can’t afford. Going to Tanzania, seeing the people, and understanding the rich heritage of the people there makes me appreciate it that much more. I also love sleeping beauty (turquoise), because it’s gorgeous. I think it’s a beautiful pop of color, and it looks good on everybody. Oh, and then black spinel! I guess there are four of them that I really like!

What’s your favorite part about working with the LC?

It’s hard to get bored. I’m the type of person that likes routine, but I also like for every day to be different. And that’s what you get here. It’s live television, so the show takes on a whole new personality. Every day is a challenge. We work as a team to reach our goals. The fact that it’s very family-oriented is another reason why I love this place. My crewmembers and I are so close. We celebrate birthdays together, and I’ve had plenty of dinner parties at my home. We really do bond and connect personally. I love that!

What’s the nicest thing a fan has done for you?

There was one time when I was doing an over night shift. I was going on and on about this ring that I was absolutely in love with. It was this 14-karat gold ring and it was amazing. Anyways, someone had bought it from the Liquidation Channel and sent it to me! Attached to it was a note that read, “I know you love this because you were really enthusiastic on air with it, so here you go.” It was such a sweet gesture! Unfortunately, I couldn’t keep it, so I sent it back. Most of our customers are repeat customers, so it really is like a family. It’s sweet when they remember certain things.

What has been the biggest adventure for you at the LC?

Definitely, the trip to Tanzania in 2012. I was asked to go along with Michelle Stoffel, Gerald Tempton, and two camera guys, Ryan and Casey. It was a huge honor. We got all suited up and went inside the mines. We put on the little helmets
with the light on it and everything! The little trolley car took us straight down to the miners. We were able to see how everything was done including the sorting. It was amazing.
