What made you want to become a host?
I kind of fell into it when I was in college. Other industries have been around forever, but this industry was so young back then that no one grew up knowing they wanted to do this. One of my real interests was advertising and marketing. I was living in Minneapolis at this time, and there was a shopping network there. I remember thinking, “This looks interesting. I might enjoy doing this.”
What made you come to Texas after living in the North for so long?
Family played a role in my decision. I have more family living down here than up there. I had been living in Minneapolis for 20 years and decided two years ago that it was time for a change. It got to a point that I was like, “Okay, what do I want to do with the next stage in my life?”
How do you feel about your relocation to warmer weather?
Because of the winters, I hate the North. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! I distinctly remember, one winter day there was a blizzard and I was stuck at a red light. I was looking around and there was snow up to my head. I thought to myself, “This is never going to melt. I don’t want to live like this for the rest of my life.” I think that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
What’s your typical day like?
I get to the building at 4 p.m. and leave at 2 a.m. I try to get together with some people from the merchandising department to find out about the gemstones and offers. I have to catch them before they leave for the day. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. is my education part of the day. I have to get a grip on the product before everyone is out of the office. The first two hours definitely fly by. After my dinner break, I get with the late-night team to prepare for our 3-hour show, which features the launch of the TLV at 1 a.m. I always go to my Facebook page to post the next day’s TLV for people who want the first look at it. You will always get the first look of the TLV before ANYONE ELSE on my Facebook page. I stay interactive online during this time by responding to comments and tweeting. It’s a pretty busy day.
What’s your Favorite part of your day as a host?
Getting prepared for the TLV launch at 1 a.m. is my favorite part because we have something very new, very exciting and at an amazing price. Leading up to 1 a.m. I’ll meet with our merchandisers about the product, get it posted on Facebook and finally talk about it on air. It’s kind of like every day you’re building up to this countdown like it’s New Years. I look forward to that part the most. I have a short attention span, so I love the fact that every day isn’t the same thing. I’ve never worked for a place where each day is so different because we turn over product so quickly.
What’s your favorite story about one of your fans?
My favorite story about a fan was when I visited some friends in New York. It’s only a New York kind of thing. We had just had lunch, and I was walking back to my hotel in Midtown Manhattan. I’m waiting for the light to change, and as I’m standing there, a bus pulls up. I’m thinking “Oh, the bus driver must think I want to get on the bus.” Well, he pulls up and opens the door to yell out, “Hey! You’re that guy on TV I buy things from!” I’m sure those passengers were not happy that he stopped while the light was green. Only in New York!
Are you a big fan of anything?
Watches have always been my favorite. I’ve been a watch collector since I was a teenager. I have over 100 watches in my collection at home. The Liquidation Channel gave me an opportunity last January to fly to China and work with our team over there to develop and design a watch. We actually just launched it on Memorial Day. We were given complete freedom from basically the bottom up. I worked on it with one of our directors, Simon. Five months later, we had a finished product. It was amazing to see all the work that goes into designing a watch. I had no clue how much goes into it. I was like, “There’s your baby born right in front of you!” The excitement of that was unreal. It is probably the single highlight of my entire career. It was beyond belief.
