HOW TO CHOOSE A PERFUME THAT SUITS YOU

For centuries, humans have been wearing perfumes. The modern perfume industry can trace its roots back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. In fact, the earliest known recipe for a fragrance is recorded on a cuneiform tablet. With such a storied history, it might feel difficult to think of how to choose a perfume for yourself.

Woman demonstrates how to choose a perfume for yourself.

Thankfully, Shop LC is here to help! We caught up with Rexana Halverson, the Senior Beauty Buyer at Shop LC. She helps bring all the great beauty products we love! And she is here to provide some insight into how to choose a perfume that suits you.

WHAT IS PERFUME?

Modern perfumery, which is the art of making perfume, got its start during the late nineteenth century. By this time, chemists were able to reliably create synthetic aroma compounds, like vanillin. This breakthrough made previously unavailable scents a possibility!

Perfumes comes in different grades. This reflects the concentration of aromatic compounds which gives perfume its potency. Definitions of a perfume’s potency vary a bit, so it’s good to experiment with different concentrations to find one that you prefer.

DOES A SCENT REFLECT YOUR PERSONALITY?

“Fragrance is a very personal reflection of your mood at any given time,” say Rexana. “It should be enjoyable and reflect you.”

“Signature scents reflect your personality as your feelings or activities shift during the day. You can adjust your fragrances to match your state of mind or how it makes you feel. Many fragrances are geared to daytime versus nighttime use, but there are no set rules. Have fun with fragrance and wear what you enjoy and makes you feel great.”

HOW DO I CHOOSE A SIGNATURE SCENT?

“Scents may trigger feelings or memories to lead you to a scent or turn you away from certain notes,” she tells Shop LC.

“Find notes that you are drawn to. And test fragrances on your pulse points (wrist, inner elbow, behind your ears, etc.). Scents may smell different on your body than in the air. Fragrance is typically broken into four main classifications: floral, oriental, woody and fresh.”

“You may find that you love one or all four flavor profiles depending on the day! For me I know that I love rose and peppermint and these wear well on me. So, I feel confident in fragrances with these ingredients.”

IS EXPENSIVE PERFUME FROM LARGE BRANDS BETTER?

“Pure parfume tends to be the most expensive as it will usually wear longer due to lower alcohol content and higher percentage of expensive ingredients with a longer lasting effect,” say Rexana.

“This is usually great for people with sensitivities to fragrance. A little bit will go a long way and may last years. That isn’t to say that other concentrations of fragrance don’t use quality ingredients. The bottom line is to pick fragrance that wears best on you and makes you feel great!”
