Giving jewelry as a gift on Valentine’s Day is a tradition that has been around for centuries. Valentine’s Day jewelry is a symbol of love and commitment. Giving a unique piece of Valentine’s jewelry can be a way to express one’s feelings for their significant other. Jewelry is a lasting and tangible reminder of the love and affection between two people.
Okay, great! But where do we go from here? Selecting a piece of jewelry is a personal expression, whether it’s for yourself or someone special. You probably already know that gemstones carry special meanings. However, did you know that certain gems also have special romantic meanings? Here are some of the top stones I see used in romantic jewelry.
- Diamonds are considered the ultimate symbol of love and commitment.
- Ruby represents passion and desire.
- Sapphire is a symbol of dedication and loyalty.
- Emerald symbolizes love and success in relationships.
- Amethyst is said to help with emotional stability, balance, and inner peace.
- Opal is said to be a symbol of faithfulness and confidence.
Valentine’s Day Rings
Rings are the most popular type of jewelry we sell at Shop LC. And for a good reason! It’s a piece that looks good and traditionally carries excellent meaning. There are usually four reasons I see when giving a Valentine’s ring.
Engagement ring: A ring given as a symbol of a couple’s commitment to marry each other. Engagement rings are probably what we all think of when considering Valentine’s Day jewelry. After all, it’s a trendy day for proposals, whether or not you find it cheesy!
Promise ring: These rings symbolize a couple’s commitment to one another, but not necessarily a commitment to marriage. For a long time, I’ve seen these used in relationships where a shared faith was a significant factor, especially for younger couples not ready for the big commitment of engagement. However, in recent years, I’m seeing promise rings embraced by couples looking for non-traditional ways of affirming their love.
Friendship ring: For a close friendship, friendship rings are a great way to reaffirm your platonic love and affection symbolically. When leading up to V-Day, these make great Galentine’s Day gifts.
A gift of love: Nothing stops you from giving a ring as a symbol of love and affection. After all, who doesn’t like getting gifts?
The meaning of the Valentine’s ring will vary depending on the couple and their relationship. The most important thing is that the ring holds sentimental value to the person receiving it.
For instance, when my partner and I first engaged, I proposed with a diamond engagement ring. Back then, I didn’t know much about gemstones (it was a really long time ago, y’all). But the journey taught me a lot. It’s where I first started taking the Four C’s seriously while learning about different gemstone cuts. It helped lead me down this path, in fact!
Over the years, we’ve upgraded her engagement ring and our wedding bands, too. We decided it was a unique way to show how we were growing as people within our marriage (and, of course, to add more bling). The above examples are just ways to show how these gifts can organically occur throughout your relationships.
Valentine’s Day Necklace
Necklaces can be more than pieces of adornment, too. A Valentine’s necklace can carry multiple meanings, depending on how and why you’re giving it.
As a symbol of togetherness, a necklace might feature a special symbol. Popular arrangements I’ve seen over the years include pendants with two stones representing the couple or a locket with some token, such as a photograph or lock of hair.
Heart-shaped gems are always popular. After all, they’re well-known symbols of love. However, I don’t hesitate to recommend pear-shaped stones. While they can reflect sorrow with their teardrop shape, they also reflect love and beauty.
A teardrop-shaped stone symbolizes love and affection, representing our tears over a loved one. Also, the elegant shape is famous for a reason! The form remains a preferred choice in fine jewelry due to its understated beauty. Like rain running down a windowpane, teardrops embody a sense of movement when worn as jewelry.
Valentine’s Day Earrings
Valentine’s earrings carry a similar meaning to other Valentine’s gifts, such as a ring or a necklace. It just comes down to the context of the present.
Earrings work exceptionally well as a fashion statement. More so than most other jewelry, earrings help draw attention to the face. They are a great way to express our style. And, enhanced with a special charm or gemstone, they can carry a special meaning.
Stud earrings are trendy, but I want to push your boundaries and recommend something different.
The oval shape is considered elegant, timeless, and versatile. Additionally, oval-shaped earrings are symbolic because of their association with the form of an egg. Eggs are symbols of new beginnings, fertility, and renewal, making them a thoughtful and meaningful gift. They are an excellent gift for your first Valentine’s Day or a special milestone.
Valentine’s Day Bracelet
One of the most famous Valentine’s bracelets is the line bracelet. A line bracelet uses a single strand of stones, a line of beads, or other decorative elements. We also call line bracelets tennis bracelets. The name “tennis bracelet” comes from the fact that professional tennis player Chris Evert famously lost her diamond bracelet during a match in 1987.
Like a ring, a bracelet is a symbol of unity. Just as a ring represents a circular loop, clasping a bracelet closed shares a similar meaning. Setting such a symbol of unity with sapphire helps solidify this gesture of commitment and fidelity.
