National Toilet Paper Day: Bidet VS Toilet Paper

WAIT… TOILET PAPER DAY?

August 26 is National Toilet Paper Day. We’re not kidding. This item is an essential, as we’ve learned over the last few years. Did you know? Americans use more toilet paper than any other country! However, more and more of us are learning about the benefits of using a bidet.

The origins of National Toilet Paper Day are murky, but would you be surprised to learn bathroom roll is an ancient invention? While toilet paper didn’t make its way west for some time, it first surfaced in Ancient China around the 14th century.

Before toilet paper, and the day to celebrate it, people devised all sorts of solutions for cleaning that area. The ancient Romans, from about 79 AD until the fall of the empire, used a special sponge on stick called tersorium. American pioneers often had to use what was available, including leaves, grasses, corncobs, fruit skins – even sea shells, sand and water!

Eventually, toilet paper became commercially available in the United States in 1857. By 1883 it and dispensers were patented. Originally, toilet paper was only available in loose, flat sheets. It wouldn’t be until the 1930s that the perforated rolls we know and love became a thing. By the 1960s, colored toilet paper came about. These rolls were developed to helps shoppers coordinate with their home décor. By the early 2000s, however, these colorful bathroom rolls were phasing out.

BIDET BENEFITS?

However, much of the world has a different solution. Don’t believe us? Over 75% of the world doesn’t use toilet paper. Most of these countries use sanitary solutions like the bidet.

There are advantages of a bidet in one’s restroom.

Bidets are popular throughout Europe and Asia. With a bit of water, a bidet cleans your backside. Ultimately, this lets you skip out on using toilet paper! Many who’ve tried both tell us that using a bidet helps them feel cleaner after using the toilet.

There are several health benefits of a bidet to share. A bidet is often considered more hygenic than using toilet paper. Since your hands aren’t coming into contact with your body as often, a bidet might also lower the spread of germs. Using a bidet might lower hemorrhoids, since less pressure is being applied to that area. And, since you are reducing your toilet paper use, bidets are better for the environment. It saves money too – perfect for Under $10 Fridays!
