“A maiden born when autumn leaves
Are rustling in September’s breeze,
A Sapphire on her brow should bind,
‘Twill cure diseases of the mind.”

Modern September Birthstone

Sapphire has reigned as the recognized September birthstone since the early 20th century. Sapphire became a modern birthstone in 1912 by entering the official list of birthstones. Those fortunate enough to be born in this month have so many options! Why? In addition to the traditional blue stone, sapphires come in an expansive variety of colors. Colored sapphires are often called “fancy sapphires.” These stones are referred to by their color (pink sapphire or chocolate sapphire, for example). Let’s take at two of the most prominent sapphire colors.

Blue Sapphire

We treasure this jewel for its royal blue hue that reflects the heavens. Blue sapphires are one of the most famous colored stones for engagement rings. Burmese sapphire and Ceylon sapphire are both popular choices for this timeless hue.

Pink Sapphire

This fancy sapphire is available in a color range from light pink to purplish pink and delicate warm pink to a violet-tinged pink. Material from Ilakaka has been making a splash in recent years, and many collectors are flocking to this gem, making it a rising star in the jewelry world.

Historical September Birthstone

The modern stone replaced chrysolite, which was considered the September birthstone for centuries. Gemstones were known primarily by their color before modern gemology. Therefore, chrysolite could refer to any gems that share its olive-green color. Current thinking suggests peridot as the most likely stone to be chrysolite. However, any number of other green stones of similar color could claim the position.
