SKINCARE IS SELF CARE
Did you know that recent studies have revealed that skin care is not just a way to look more beautiful but also good for your mental and emotional well-being? Skincare is the ultimate act of self-care, like a personal love letter to yourself. It’s the daily ritual that says, “I value my well-being and deserve to feel good in my own skin.” By nurturing our skin, we cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves, enhancing confidence and embracing our unique beauty.
HOW DOES SKIN CARE WORK?
Skincare works by implementing a thorough routine that preserves and enhances the health and appearance of your skin. Depending on individual skin type and concern, it may include cleansing, exfoliating, toning, treating, hydrating, moisturizing, and protecting the skin against external factors such as sun damage and pollution. Skincare products, encompassing cleansers, serums, and creams, feature active ingredients that tackle specific skin concerns like acne, aging, or hyperpigmentation. These ingredients actively nourish, hydrate, repair, and rejuvenate the skin, fostering a balanced complexion and a radiant, youthful look.
SUMMER SKINCARE REGIMENS FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE
Your skin type determines what products and ingredients you should use to cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin. I spoke with skin doctors and beauty experts to learn some of the best skin care practices tailored to suit your skin type.
According to dermatologist Dr. HariKiran Chekuri, here are some guidelines for each skin type:
Oily Skin
Oily skin produces excess sebum, which can clog pores and cause acne. To prevent this, use a gentle cleanser that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to remove dirt, oil, and bacteria. Avoid harsh scrubs or alcohol-based toners that can strip your skin of its natural moisture. Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic gel moisturizer and a mattifying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV rays and prevent shine.
Dry Skin
Dry skin lacks moisture and can feel tight, flaky, or itchy. To hydrate your skin, use creamy products containing hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Avoid hot water or soap that can dry out your skin. Apply a moisturizing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV rays and prevent further water loss.
Combination Skin
Combination skin has oily and dry areas, usually on the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and the cheeks. Use a gentle facewash that suits oily and dry areas to balance your skin. You can also use different moisturizers for different parts of your face: a gel or lotion for the oily areas and a cream or oil for the dry areas. A gel-based sunscreen will be most suitable.
Sensitive Skin
Calm sensitive skin with a fragrance-free, alcohol-free cleanser. Steer clear of harsh chemicals, artificial colors, and exfoliants. Soothe with a gentle moisturizer containing aloe vera, chamomile, or oatmeal. Protect with SPF 30+ mineral-based sunscreen, free from potential irritants.
Normal Skin
Dr. Chaudhry MBBS of Scandinavian Biolabs says, “People with normal skin usually have balanced moisture levels. During summer, using a lightweight moisturizer with SPF, cleaning the face twice a day, and using a toner to minimize pores is advisable.”
Remember, no matter your skin type, you should always apply sunscreen. As Genne Liu, skin expert & co-founder at SkinSort, suggests, “I advocate for everyone (no matter what skin type!) to have at least a five step-routine year-round: makeup remover, face cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. It is vital to clean your skin at night to avoid clogged pores from sweat! Everyone should be wearing sunscreen. About 80-90% of aging is caused by sun exposure. The sun is much stronger in summer, so use at least SPF 30 if going outside.
MARVA’S SUMMER SKINCARE ROUTINE
Shop LC Host Marva Nation is a beauty and skincare expert. Let’s find out the secrets behind her glowing, flawless face.
Marva says, “I use multi-peptide serums from the Ordinary or the Mychelle brands daily to help maintain my skin’s suppleness and texture. I also use a Vitamin C serum from The Lab for an antioxidant. I also use the Clinical Results 24.7 biomimetic moisturizer daily. I top everything off with our 100% organic jojoba oil. I will look at David’s PGA serum or another hyaluronic acid in the winter to get more moisture. Once per week, I will exfoliate with any acid-based mask.”
LATEST INNOVATIONS IN ANTI-AGING SKINCARE
As you age, your skin changes—wrinkles, sagging, dullness, dryness, age spots, and loss of elasticity may occur. Skincare needs also evolve for women aged 35 and above due to hormonal changes and decreased collagen production. Combat these signs with targeted products and treatments to boost your skin’s health and vitality.
Some of the latest innovations in anti-aging skin care are:
- Retinoids: Derivatives of vitamin A that stimulate collagen production, improve cell turnover, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, and fade hyperpigmentation.
- Peptides: Amino acids that help rebuild collagen and elastin, leading to firmer, more youthful skin.
- LED Beauty Mask: Glow up with the Verdermis 7-color LED beauty mask! This game-changing facial toning device uses LED light therapy to revive your skin. Elevate your skincare routine with seven color options, targeting specific concerns. It’s non-invasive and oh-so-effective—your secret to radiant skin.
- Beauty Tech Devices: The ultimate skincare innovation is blending skin care with technology. These beauty devices use LED light therapy, thermal, and vibration technology for instant and effective results.
SKINCARE WITHOUT PRODUCTS
Florida-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anna Chacon discusses the importance of a healthy, balanced diet in maintaining good skin. She says, “Nourish and hydrate your body with refreshing salads, smoothies & veggies like lettuce and cucumber. Embrace seasonal delights like watermelons, musk melons, and citrus fruits for a healthy skin boost.”
You can also opt for some expert-backed natural remedies.
- Aloe Vera: Use in skin care to hydrate and stimulate collagen for youthful skin.
- Tomato and Honey Face Mask: Using fresh tomato pulp mixed with honey will help eliminate sunburn and fine lines and add instant radiance.
- Honey and Yogurt Mask: Mix honey and yogurt to make a face mask that nourishes and hydrates skin.
- Green Tea Ice Cubes: Freeze green tea into ice cubes and gently rub it on your face for a refreshing effect.
- Turmeric: Anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties make it an excellent ingredient for face masks or smoothies. Remember only to use a pinch since it has an overpowering color.
