There is a growing interest in CBD products across the nation. Proponents tell us that CBD may provide several benefits to those in need, especially women. Others, however, remain cautious and are waiting for more information. Increasing research suggests that CBD may provide medical benefits. What is CBD?

Cannabis use for medicinal purposes spans thousands of years. For instance, some of the earliest evidence of use point to burial mounds in Siberia, dating to 3000 BCE.

CBD means cannabidiol, a compound known as a cannabinoid. It is one of two active ingredients in the cannabis plant.

The other active ingredient is THC. THC is a psychoactive ingredient that can alter a person’s mindset. However, CBD is not psychoactive. Also, by Federal law, hemp plants must contain less than 0.3% THC.

CBD derives from the hemp plant. Hemp is a cousin of the cannabis plant. However, using hemp products will not create a “high.” It is not marijuana.

CBD Benefits

Some believe that CBD offers a natural alternative to over-the-counter drugs for pain relief. CBD products contain a concentration of CBD. CBD is the active ingredient many say provide beneficial feelings when used.

Research suggests that CBD may be able to treat chronic pain and other ailments, including:

  • Pain from arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Depression symptoms
  • Quitting smoking

Otherwise, outside of limited use as a drug for two rare types of epilepsy, the FDA does not permit CBD for use in other drugs or dietary supplements.

How Does CBD Work?

The human body naturally produces cannabinoids. Cannabinoids work by attaching to certain receptors in the human body.

There are two types of receptors for cannabinoids; CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors deal with movement, pain, mood, appetite, and more. On the other hand, CB2 receptors deal with the immune system, inflammation, and pain.

Current thinking suggests that CBD encourages our bodies to use more of our natural cannabinoids. Ongoing research continues to gauge effectiveness.

Is CBD Safe?

With the growing awareness around CBD, more and more people are trying it out to see if they get a benefit. But, when using any new product, there is always concern about its safety. In most documentation, potential side effects of CBD use may include nausea, tiredness, or irritability. Other side effects may be possible. 

“CBD appears to be a safe drug with no addictive effects,” The National Institute on Drug Abuse.

“In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD,” World Health Organization.

“The FDA has seen only limited data about CBD safety and these data point to real risks that need to be considered before taking CBD for any reason,” Food and Drug Administration.

CBD Dosing

International groups and Federal agencies are still developing a position on CBD use. Like using any new product, it is important to take your time and learn what works best for you.

Start low, go slow. There are currently no regulations on CBD dosing.

CBD may interact with some medications, especially those processed through the liver. This is especially important if your medication includes a “grapefruit warning,” as CBD can interfere with enzymes that affect drug metabolism.
