Did you know? 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). It is the second leading cause of death for women in the United States.
While there currently is no cure for breast cancer, early detection is crucial to survival. According to the American Cancer Society, death rates from breast cancer have declined by 40% between 1989 and 2016!
NBCF’s mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services. Alongside Shop LC, we’re raising awareness about breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
There are three key areas where NBCF helps women – early detection, education, and support.
Early detection is the most vital step in surviving breast cancer. Women who have screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. However, those who can’t afford these services are at a higher risk of death. NBCF helps fill this gap.
About 11% of women in the US are uninsured. This translates to millions of women not having access to care like life-saving mammography. However, by increasing access to these services, survivability increases by up to 20%! Simply put, access to breast health care and services improves well-being and quality of life.
